This beautiful town on the eastern side of Malaga and on the edge of
the Granada province is known as the Jewel in the Crown of the Costa del
Sol. From all along the coast you can take advantage of the spectacular
views from the sheer cliffs, the Sierra Almijara and Sierra Tejada Nature
Reserves and also explore the pretty bays and magnificent beaches, all
part of the Natural Park of Maro-Cerro Gordo.
Nerja is just 45minutes from the airports of Malaga and 90minutes from
Granada, where you can visit The Alhambra and Generalife Gardens, one
of the monuments most visited in Spain.
On your daily walks around the town of Nerja don’t forget to visit the famous Balcon De Europa once the site of a IX century Moorish Castle, now a palm fringed promenade with magnificent views over the sea. This is certainly one of the places most visited by residents, tourists and local artists during the summer months. From here you can access the local beach of Burriana along a pathway carved out of the rocks, known as paseo de los Carabineros. It is also worth visiting the Church of El Salvador dating from the 17th century.
Just 3 km from Nerja is the tiny hamlet of Maro home to the famous caves of Nerja founded in the 1960’s by some local boys rock climbing. This natural treasure is also high on the list of the most visited sites in Spain and where in the summer months spectacular concerts and dancing festivals are held with internationally renowned artists performing. There is also a charming church in the heart of the village dating back from the 17th century, Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas.
